Anna Friel Confirmed For Gender Drama Butterfly

As filming begins in Manchester, ITV has announced that Anna Friel (Marcella) and Emmett J. Scanlan (The Fall) will star in Tony Marchant’s (Garrow’s Law) new mini series Butterfly.

Butterfly is follows the acrimonious relationship between separated parents, Vicky (Anna Friel) and Stephen (Emmett J. Scanlan), and their division over how best to support their child, Max (Callum Booth-Ford).

From a young age, 11-year-old Max has identified himself as a girl and as puberty looms this intensifies. As Max’s distress escalates, Stephen seizes the opportunity to return to the family home and support his son.

The social transition of Max to Maxine is initially thwarted because of Vicky and Stephen’s differing opinions but, as Maxine grows in confidence and becomes certain that she’s in the right skin, will everyone support her?

Butterfly is directed by Anthony Byrne (Ripper Street) and the cast includes; Alison Steadman (Gavin and Stacey), Sean McGinley (Paula), Millie Gibson (Love Lies and Records), Amy Huberman (Striking Out), Lorraine Burroughs (Hard Sun) and Felicity Montagu (I’m Alan Partridge).
