Anna Friel Returns To Work On Marcella Series Two

ITV has announced that production begins this month on the eight-part second series of London noir thriller Marcella, written by Hans Rosenfeldt (The Bridge) and starring Anna Friel (Broken).

The story begins with the discovery of a body inside a wall, surrounded by soft toys and a school blazer. A devastated Marcella soon works out that the body is that of schoolboy Leo Priestley, a friend of Marcella’s son who was abducted a few years before.

Meanwhile, Marcella’s battle with her sporadic fugue states continues, which she is struggling to come to terms with and becoming increasingly worried about the effect it is having on her family.

Anna Friel said: “I’m thrilled to be reprising the role of Marcella and want to thank ITV for recommissioning this powerful London based noir drama. The reaction from everyone has been amazing, although the real question I keep being asked is whether the green parka will be making an appearance in season 2 as well?”

Reprising their roles alongside Anna Friel for series two are Ray Panthaki (One Crazy Thing) as DI Rav Sangha, Jamie Bamber (Fearless) as DI Tim Williamson, Jack Doolan (White Gold) as DC Mark Travis, and Nicholas Pinnock (Fortitude) as Nicholas Pinnock.

New cast members include: Nigel Planer (The Young Ones), Keith Allen (Robin Hood), Sophia Brown (Beauty & The Beast, Clique, Disobedience), Peter Sullivan (Borgias), Jason Hughes (Three Girls), Victoria Smurfit (Once Upon A Time), Yolanda Kettle (The Crown,), Josh Herdman (Harry Potter) and Harriet Cains (Line of Duty).

The first series of Marcella averaged 6.8 million viewers, giving it a 25% share of the available audience, and became one of ITV’s top rated dramas last year.
