Denise Gough & Tom Hughes To Star In McPherson Thriller

BBC Two has announced that Olivier award winner Denise Gough (Stella), Tom Hughes (Victoria) and Owen McDonnell (Spooks) will star in Conor McPherson’s new three part revenge thriller, Paula, to be directed by Alex Holmes (House of Saddam).

Paula follows the fallout from a one-night stand in a young Chemistry teacher’s life. The pair have an animalistic, spark of attraction between them but soon become locked in a spiral of mutual destruction from which only one can survive.

Denise Gough says: “Having worked with Conor McPherson on stage I am so excited to work with him again on this amazing project. He’s written a script that I know all of us involved feel very privileged to be part of bringing to life. Paula is a brilliantly complex woman and I can’t wait to play her.”

Conor McPherson says: “Exploring new ways to tell stories is always an inspiring challenge and the opportunity to weave a drama across three evenings is one I have enjoyed immensely. The trust and freedom [that the BBC and Cuba Pictures] have given me at every step is something every writer dreams about.”

Paula begins filming in Belfast this October.
