Filming Begins On CBBC Adaptation Of The Worst Witch

CBBC have announced that filming is underway for its 13 part adaptation of Jill Murphy’s The Worst Witch. This is CBBC’s second coproduction with German broadcaster and distributor ZDF, which follows the success of Wolfblood.

From a world outside of magic, Mildred Hubble finds herself literally landing head first at Miss Cackle’s Academy for witches. The series follows her adventures and friendships as she strives not to be The Worst Witch!

Bella Ramsey is cast as Mildred Hubble; Meibh Campbell and Tamara Smart are her friends Maud Spellbody and Enid Nightshade; and Jenny Richardson will play Maud’s arch enemy, Ethel Hallow.

Clare Higgins (Downton Abbey) will play Headmistress Miss Cackle; Raquel Cassidy (Teachers) is Deputy Head Miss Hardbroom; Wendy Craig (The Royal) plays Miss Bat; Nicola Stephenson (Emmerdale) is cast as Ms Hubble; and Kacey Ainsworth (Call The Midwife) is Miss Gullet.

Jill Murphy says: “The Worst Witch has been the cornerstone of my career. I illustrate my own books, so I am very protective about them in every way, and I’m delighted to say that this wonderful new production ticks all the boxes.”

“There have been a few changes… but die-hard fans needn’t worry, Miss Hardbroom is always on hand making sure that ‘Standards will NOT be slipping!'”

Filming will take place on location in Cheshire throughout the summer, with additional filming in Germany, and will air on CBBC early 2017.
