Kit Harington In Explosive New Gunpowder Thriller

BBC One has announced explosive new three part thriller Gunpowder, written by Ronan Bennett (Top Boy), about the real driving force behind the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, starring Kit Harington and Mark Gatiss.

Robert Catesby (Kit Harington) was a 30-year old Warwickshire gentleman and committed Catholic, at a time when Catholics were persecuted and hunted down by King James’s spymaster in Chief Robert Cecil (Mark Gatiss). Punishment included imprisonment, fines, harassment and even death.

Catesby’s refusal to abandon his religion brought him to the edge of financial, social and psychological ruin. His wife and father had both recently died, leaving him to bring up a young son in an increasingly hostile world, but despite the protestations of Jesuit Father Garnet (Peter Mullan), doing nothing was not an option for Catesby.

As he devised his audacious plan, Catesby began to recruit friends and relatives, swearing them to secrecy, but his cousin Anne Vaux (Liv Tyler) became suspicious about his activities and feared that the consequences might be the exact opposite of what was intended.

Filming begins for Gunpowder this month, and is directed by J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed).
