Tom Riley To Star In ITV Encore Thriller Dark Heart

ITV has announced that Tom Riley (Da Vinci’s Demons) will star in feature length crime thriller Dark Heart, based on the novel Suffer the Children by Adam Creed. This adaptation for ITV Encore is written by Chris Lang (Unforgotten) and directed by Colin Teague (Jekyll & Hyde).

DI Will Wagstaffe (Tom Riley), known as Staffe, is at London City airport when his colleague, DC Josie Chancellor (Anjli Monhindra) calls to inform him of a murder. At the scene, Staffe, DC Chancellor, DS Dave Pulford (Kobna Holdbrook-Smith) and DS Rick Johnson (Tom Brooke) find Ray Collins (Mark Fleischmann) tied to his own bed, choked and severely mutilated.

As the team investigate further, they learn that Collins was arrested two and a half years before on suspicion of the sexual assault of his own daughters, who were just nine and eleven at the time. He was remanded in custody for three weeks released due to insufficient evidence.

Soon after Collins’ death a lawyer, Guy Dawlish (Nicholas Asbury), is brutally attacked, and tied to his bed using the same type of knots used to restrain Collins. Dawlish, too, had previously been arrested following allegations of child sex abuse and was released due to a lack of evidence.

With two alleged paedophiles attacked within days of each other, Staffe fears that this may be just the beginning…

ITV Controller of Drama, Victoria Fea, said: “As Will Wagstaffe investigates gruesome crimes it’s hard to believe that his personal life could be as complex as his day job, but as we get to know Staffe we realise he’s utterly haunted by his past. Viewers will be left guessing not only who is behind the murders that Staffe is investigating, but also wondering what history lies behind Wagstaffe’s family.”

Dark Heart also stars Miranda Raison, Charlotte Riley, Joseph Teague, and Edward Akrout. Filming will take place in and around London from the end of June until mid July.
